East-West All Star Most Valuable Player

The 1949 Shrine East-West All Star game complimented a brilliant 1948 undefeated Notre Dame football season for John Panelli. The series was referred to in the press as a “parade of All Americans” and capped the college bowl season on New Year's day. Panelli played for the East and carried the ball 17 times for 98 yards averaging 5.6 yards per carry. He scored one of the Easts two touchdowns in a muddy and very close 14-12 slug fest with the West. His performance earned him MVP for the game and won him the prestigious Coffman Trophy. His good friend Don Doll, the star halfback from USC (and later fellow Detroit Lion) came in 2 nd in the voting. Fellow Notre Damer and All-American (and later fellow Chicago Cardinal) Moose Fisher captained the East in the game. Fellow ND teammate and Heisman Trophy winner John Lujack won the trophy the year before
